VERONICA RICHARDS: Infections are rarely medical malpractice cases. When they are medical malpractice case it is because there was a delay in the diagnosis of the infection or there was a delay in the treatment of the infection.

A delayed diagnosis in an infection can actually lead to a severe life threatening condition that's called sepsis. Sepsis is really when the infection gets into the bloodstream itself.

The symptoms are very common symptoms in that the person will have a fever. They'll have an increased breathing rate. They'll have an increased heart rate. They often get chills. Certainly things that people are familiar with which may be similar to the flu symptoms.
The key to diagnosing sepsis is really prevention. And if you can find the source of the infection and treat the source of the infection then you'll prevent sepsis.

Once you have sepsis, which means the bacteria has gone into your bloodstream, then the treatment is aggressive antibiotics and aggressive IV therapy. But if it is diagnosed and treated early, over 90% of the patients diagnosed with sepsis will survive.
If your loved one died from sepsis and you suspect that there was a delay in the diagnosis and treatment, call us. We can investigate and get you the answers you deserve.
