VERONICA RICHARDS: For decades there have been debates about insurance coverage for all Americans. And there's arguments for and against every position. Except there's one position that we all as Americans should be for and that's for patient safety.
In the late 90s, the Institute of Medicine studied medical records and discovered that 98,000 Americans died of medical errors per year. And despite that alarming statistic, the debate still does not include patient safety.
One of the things as a nurse practitioner that was always my priority was patient safety and making sure that when errors did occur they were never repeated.
But as a nurse practitioner, I really do empathize with, with how difficult it is in the health care system, particularly a system that not only fails patients every day, but fails the physicians and the nurses and the nurse practitioners that are desperately trying to do the right thing.
But they're working in a broken system and the end result is people are injured and people are killed and it's preventable. Doctors cover for each other. Doctors are not honest with their patients and tell them what really happened. It's the preventable medical malpractice cases that we take and that we investigate and that we pursue to get justice for a victim.
