VERONICA RICHARDS: Informed consent is a kind of medical malpractice case where a patient elects to have a surgical procedure and wasn't told about the risks or the doctor's experience.
With today's medical treatment, there are very, very complex surgical procedures that are actually lifesaving that are available today that weren't available even ten years ago. But there are also increased risks and patients need to know what those risks are.
For example, they are doing liver transplants where they take a part of a live person's liver and transplant it into a person who is suffering from liver disease. That procedure carries a lot of risk for the patient who is healthy and donating their liver and certainly, of course, risk to the person who is suffering from some kind of perhaps terminal liver disease.
The patient has a right to know what the risks are to them when they are donating a part of their liver to somebody who obviously they must love if they're willing to go through that procedure to save their life.
