VERONICA RICHARDS: One of the most important things when a person goes to an emergency room is that the doctor makes the effort to get a thorough and complete history of your complaints and your past medical history. It's the doctor's responsibility to know what questions to ask you to get the important information. Once the doctor has a complete medical history, the appropriate diagnostic tests have got to be ordered to make sure that whatever condition you have it is not life threatening or a serious condition that immediate treatment will make an absolute difference in the outcome.
SANDRA NEUMAN: One of the problems with medicine today and particularly in an emergency room setting is that there simply is not enough time taken too often due to time and insurance considerations. Physicians lean one way without ruling out another.
VERONICA RICHARDS: A very common condition that people come to the emergency room with is a complaint of chest or abdominal pain. And what a doctor has to do in that situation is make sure it's not something life threatening, like a heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or an aortic aneurysm.
