VERONICA RICHARDS: Certainly not all medical illnesses are preventable, for example, cancer. When cancer becomes a medical malpractice case, most frequently, it is because the diagnosis of the cancer was not made in a timely manner, despite the fact the information was available, or the treatment that was rendered for cancer does not meet the reasonable standards.
In other words the information, if someone would have looked, was available to the physician and they just didn't look. Despite the fact the patient had symptoms and complaints that would lead a reasonable physician to consider cancer as a potential diagnosis.
SANDRA NEUMAN: A timely diagnosis of cancer is often the difference between having a successful outcome or death.
VERONICA RICHARDS: Cancer used to be a death sentence. But that's no longer true. There are many cancers that are completely curable if they are diagnosed early and treated appropriately.
